Unemployment among Aboriginal Youths: Would Better Education for them be a Panacea?

Upon reading this article tonight I was sort of little absorbed to know that the youth cohorts from aboriginal communities are facing very difficult job market situations which have left many unemployed. Based on other research reports which I read afterwards (for example the one published recently by the United Nations) as well as in line with the views forwarded by John Richards from Simon Fraser University as cited in the article, my conviction now is that education comes first to address this issue properly. This typical situation can be explained even from simple textbook models of demand and supply. In the labour market, the minimum wage set by the government appears to be above the equilibrium wage for these people as they may want to take the job even at lower rate than the minimum wage, owing to the fact, as pointed out in the article, that aboriginal youths lack enough education depriving them of necessary skills to acquire the job. The minimum wage in this case is a binding minimum wage for them which create unemployment, the situation these people are facing now. With any policy intervention that promotes education for this group, the labour demand curve will shift to the right, at least in the long-run, which will bring equilibrium wage at higher level (that is, towards the current minimum wage level) and then the unemployment rate among these groups would start falling. Just my thought. Your opinions are most welcome.

  3. In my opionion, government should focus part of their funding on maintaining education systems in these countries, first and foremost is need to understand their culture, history and life habit, then decide the best solution. even set limted wage is best way for reduce the youth cohorts from aboriginal communities, but not all counrty accept same problem, like Africa and Vietnam.

    1. I agree with your views. Education is important for everyone, which can help us to get a great job. That's the reason why I decide to go to Canada for study, it can let me have more choice in future time.

  5. The issue seems to be one of supply and demand. The article in the paper talks about the growth in Aboriginal businesses, but that there is not enough supply of aboriginal qualified employees to meet the demand of the businesses. The real problem is that the aboriginal youth have low education levels. It seems that if their education levels increased to at least graduate highschool, then they would be more employable. The government does provide educational support for aboriginal youth for post-seconadary education. It is not clear why there is a problem with these students completing their high school but if the problem is that they do not have access to a good high school education then given the over supply of qualified teachers in urban areas in Canada perhaps the government should be providing financial incentives for these teachers to relocate to these under supplied areas on reserves in areas such as Moosefactory, Ontario.

  7. I totally agree with you that promoting education will help to reduce unemployment rate among Aboriginal Youths in the long-run. It is true the government does provide education for Aboriginal Youths, but is it the proper education? since Aboriginal Youths have problem completing their schooling, the government should focus on this problem to help them complete their education. That would fix the whole situation.

  10. The Better Education for them be a Panacea. Fundamental value of education is to give countries with lofty beliefs, moral, honest and law-abiding, skilled, erudite, multi-designed pluripotent talent, cultivate economic and social development needs of the workforce, training qualified citizens for the country, for the home creating knowledge for the social sciences and material wealth, and promote economic growth, and promote national prosperity and promoting human development, promote world peace and human development.

  11. As you have pointed out this situation can be represented by the supply and demand model. The demand for workers is there, however, the expectations of these workers has increased. In the past individuals could obtain most jobs without having completed a high school education. However, in todays economy there is demand for highly educated, trained, and skilled workers. Which is where it appears the Aboriginal Youth are failing to meet these demands. In order to solve this problem, the government may have to revaluate the resources they are currently providing to Aboriginal Youth in order to encourage education and ultimately aid them to find jobs. Perhaps the current system is insufficient.

  12. Education can improve the level of young people is, but when they start to work, they need a better wage policy provided by the government. From a policy change, make the balance of the social income gradually.
